We know it’s tough to sort through the offerings on the 700,000 streaming services churning out content, so we’re bringing you a curated little list of what to watch. This week: “Canada’s Drag Race” returns! “Cruel Intentions” redux! New specials from Anthony Jeselnik, Jim Gaffigan and James Acaster!
Toronto has a very strong showing in Season 5, with Helena Poison, Makayla Couture, Minhi Wang, Perla and Sanjina DaBish Queen all representing our city. But we’re rooting for hometown hero the Virgo Queen and her high-energy dance moves most of all. Stream it on Crave.
Mindy Kaling’s raunchy comedy returns for a third season, its randy girls riding high as they enter their sophomore year. Options have expanded this year, apparently, given the glow-up many male classmates experienced (Skinny Greg, for example, morphed into Thick Greg: “look at all that tiddy meat he put on,” Lila marvels). Stream it on Crave.
“Les Liaisons Dangereuses” got a set of lavish ’80s adaptations, but the seminal ’90s teen sex romp version will always have our boner — er, our heart. “Cruel Intentions” gets its own reboot with this update. (OG actor Sean Patrick Thomas makes an appearance, albeit as a different character.) Stream it on Prime Video.
Michael Schur has created some of the best comedies of this century, from “Parks and Recreation” to “The Good Place.” Now he reteams with Ted Danson for a TV show version of the feted documentary “The Mole Agent.” Here Danson goes undercover in a seniors home to track down a missing family heirloom. Stream it on Netflix.
What would you do if you had to leave your country … forever? Oscar-nominated Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”) helms this thought-provoking drama that explores how people react when the entire population of Denmark must evacuate due to rising water levels. Stream it Friday on CBC Gem.
“The Empress” scored banger viewership for its first season and now history buffs can sink their teeth into a second season of juicy court intrigue as Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Devrim Lingnau) must juggle challenges both political and marital while birthing a viable heir. Stream it Friday on Netflix.
From the “truth is stranger than fiction” files, we have this miniseries based on the real-life story of a group of low-key criminals who pulled off a truly audacious heist, landing on the roof of a cash depot and making off with the loot via helicopter. Stream it Friday on Netflix.
The affable standup returns for another special, poking fun as always at the vagaries of family life as well as his newly svelte form (“People won’t even say anything to me, they’ll just go up to my wife and say, ‘Is Jim OK?’ because to them it’s more likely that I’m sick than I would ever have any self-discipline”). Stream it Friday on Disney Plus.
British comic James Acaster changed the rules for this special, giving audience members free rein to heckle, talk amongst themselves, go on their phones or sit silently. (He can’t, however, single out anyone who has chosen not to heckle him, either.) He has to accept whatever happens. Find out if the execution is as funny as the premise. Stream it Saturday on Crave.
The year 2004 marked history’s deadliest tsunami, racking up a death toll of a quarter of a million people. This miniseries explores the horrors of the disaster, minute by minute, with unseen footage and new interviews, but also celebrates the resilience of the human spirit. Stream it Sunday on StackTV.
At last we get the thrilling conclusion of the second half of Season 7 — almost a year and a half later. The series picks up with Claire (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) en route back to Scotland with Young Ian in tow, but the lovers might end up separated once more due to more war drama. Stream it Monday on StackTV.
“Madden NFL” is one of the most popular video games of all time, even influencing real-life coaches and players. Huddle up for this docuseries, which gives you the play-by-play on how the multibillion-dollar game came to be and why it continues to inspire such devotion almost four decades later. Stream it Tuesday on Prime Video.
The caustic comedian remains at the top of his game, riding his signature deadpan humour and perfect timing to astonishingly dark — yet always hilarious — places. Stream it Tuesday on Netflix.
